bedtime

The rain has ended. No more steady patter, no more swishing wipers. Through open windows I see past my blinds, into darkness, then other blinds - in one, a kitchen light, in another, a flickering screen. A single car passes along wet pavement, a sleeping baby breathes evenly in my arms. For the first time today the house is silent.

It's been a loud day. Tonight I'm glad for the contrast, screeching replaced by dripping trees, kicking legs now curled and still on the other side of the wall. Tomorrow we begin again, but tonight - right now - we rest.

Amen.
