true.

A woman once commented to me, "I don't care who you are, all women like to get jewelry from their husbands." I smiled, but thought, well, no, not really. The only jewelry I have ever received from Brian are my wedding and engagement rings. I'm just not a jewelry kind of girl, and Brian knows that.

Valentine's Day? The only thing notable about it was how insignificant it was. It wasn't just that we didn't go out - we didn't even TALK about going out. No cards, no candies, no chocolate for the kids. Zilch. At different times we have gone out on Valentine's Day, but we both feel like, in general, Valentine's Day is the epitome of a commercial holiday (it's about as authentic as Coca Cola's Santa), and why should we make a big deal about saying "I love you" on February 14, and not the 15th, or 12th? I know, whatever. If you went out, I hope you had fun. We ignored it altogether.

So you can imagine my surprise when Asher came barreling into the kitchen shortly after Brian got home this afternoon. "Close your eyes! Daddy has a prize for you!" I closed and waited, as requested. I opened my eyes, Brian grinning, and my heart melted when I saw the box.

Because nothing says, "Even though most of our conversations are about alternators and preschool registration and schedules and new glasses and what's-for-breakfast, I still remember who you are before and while and after you're a mama" quite like this:

New Chacos. In red. With hiking soles, of course.

I love you too Bud.

We never do Valentines day either, not to make any kind of statement or anything, we just feel the same way you do, why is Feb 14th any different than Feb 15th?

I prefer random acts of love =)

I couldn't agree more on the commercialism of V-day. I want to be told I'm loved every day, not just February 14th (because Hallmark told someone)!

By the way, I'm another one who doesn't fit into the "every woman loves jewelry" category. It seems like such a waste of money to me. I'll take my cheap jewelry any day over the expensive stuff.

We are hit and miss on Vday. Sometimes we do something. Sometimes not. This year, not. Last year, he got me my iPod touch. I don't care for gifts of jewelry. He gave me my wedding rings, like you said, and that is all I want.

So sweet! And I agree about Valentine's Day. Too much pressure to be romantic for no other reason than that it is Feb 14th. I do like the heart decorations, though. I buy those up at half-price sales after the day and use them at our engaged couples retreats. Now THAT'S a reasonable time to be thinking romantically.
