Most of the time, parties just aren't as much fun when you're an adult.
Birthdays are boiled down to going out to dinner and a gift card. Valentine's Day is from Hallmark. Christmas is exhausting. Holidays as an adult are just - dull, mostly. Where are the candygrams from all of my friends? Where are the plastic eggs full of jelly beans? Candy bars won from trick-or-treating? The thrill of a gift - completely mysterious - under the tree? Snowmen made from cotton balls? Ornaments with my picture glued in the middle? It's all gone. Unless you enjoy alcohol (and by and large, I do not), the older you are, the more sterile holidays become.
Which is one more reason I love having children.
Holidays are fun again. Glue and glitter are once again part of my life. Candy is exciting, gifts have reclaimed their magic, and anticipation is palpable. And tomorrow, for the first time ever, I will celebrate Fat Tuesday. Moon pies, beads, king cake, red beans and rice - it's going to be so fun. Parties are so much more fun with kids around, and tomorrow's will have 19 (!). I can't wait.

I admire you for this post. Me? Parties with kids are nightmares. Noise and sticky stuff and sugar highs. I'll take grown up holidays, please.
Maybe I'm just a kid a heart then, cause I still love holidays and birthdays. I love the celebration of it all, the anticipation, and yes, the holiday themed socks I get to wear only once a year! (a set for each holiday! :)
And 19 kids! Woah. Good luck! ;)
I agree...holidays have become much more fun now that I get to see them through the eyes of a little one. I enjoyed the childless parties with their fancy dinner trays and party themes and not needing to keep a little one from knocking over the punch bowl, but the magic just wasn't there.
